The black coffee theory

Have you heard about the Black Coffee Theory? It seems to be popping up everywhere in my feeds lately, and I have to say—I love it. Mostly because it’s painfully accurate. If you haven’t heard it, let me share it with you.

You walk into a coffee shop.

You step up to the counter and the barista asks what you’d like.

Instead of ordering, you say,
“Well… I definitely don’t want black coffee.”

She pauses.

“Okay… so what do you want?”

You shrug.

“I’m just sure I don’t want black coffee.”

She nods politely and walks away confused.

Ten minutes later drinks are flying out of the espresso machine. She’s trying to remember your order, and what’s the only thing she remembers you talking about?

Black coffee.

So guess what lands on your table?

Black coffee.

Now here’s the part that hit me this week.

A lot of people are living their lives exactly like that coffee order.

We spend an incredible amount of time talking about what we don’t want.

I don’t want to fail.
I don’t want to struggle financially.
I don’t want this stress.

But that’s not a vision—that’s just resistance. And resistance is not the same thing as direction.

It’s like standing at the counter of life saying, “Anything but this,” and expecting the universe to somehow guess the rest.

Clarity matters.

“I want success.”
“I want financial freedom.”
“I want peace.”

Those are orders.

And orders move you forward.

When you focus only on escaping something, you’re still giving it all your attention.

It’s like trying to drive somewhere new while staring in the rearview mirror.

So here’s the thought for this Thursday:

Stop obsessing over what you don’t want.

Walk up to the counter of your life and order what you actually want.

Otherwise don’t be surprised when you keep getting black coffee.
